Dale Elliot takes Riverland employers on goal setting journey

More than 30 Riverland employers representing small, medium and large local businesses attended the Job Prospects Leadership and Success Business Forum in Berri on Thursday 5 November to hear from keynote motivational speaker Dale Elliott, on how to use goal setting and leadership to succeed through adversity.

Hosted by well known television and radio personality Leigh McClusky, the group also heard from a panel of Riverland employers, including Paul Dack from Almondco, Neville Preece from Randstad and Steve Barton from Destiny Farm, on how they find, hire and keep good people for their businesses.

Local MP Tim Whetstone and Federal MP for Barker, Tony Pasin also attended the event.

The forum was organised by SYC’s employment services division, Job Prospects, as a means of providing local employers with insights and tactics that might provide a competitive edge for them in today’s challenging business environment. Job Prospects is a jobactive provider,  an Australian Government initiative.

Dale Elliott, also a Riverland local by birth, has become a popular stand up comedian and successful keynote speaker after having a devastating motorbike accident which shattered his spine, resulting in him becoming a paraplegic and having to give up his much loved career as a commercial pilot.  His success in turning adversity into prosperity since then by sharing his experiences with a variety of audiences, including business leaders, has led him to speaking to audiences of over 10,000 people and receiving a 2010 Citizen of the Year Award.

According to Mr Elliott, his experience taught him the value of goal setting, both as a way to create prosperity in business and fulfilment in life.

“It’s something that everyone can relate to.  Most people can understand how devastating my experience would have been, so to see how I used goal setting to create a new career and reach prosperity and fulfilment after all of that, inspires them into using goal setting in their own business or personal life to achieve the same things” Mr Elliott said.

“And a big part of being successful in business is finding and keeping the right people” he added.

Job Prospects Director of Operations, David Furniss, agrees that hiring the right people and keeping staff turnover down is an important key to success in business.

“We have been in the business of sourcing good employees for our employer customers for nearly two decades now, so we know how important this is and we know how best to go about that” Mr Furniss said.
