HYPA Housing Connects with Community on Neighbour Day
Continuing the tradition set in 2016 our HYPA Housing Adelaide site hosted a BBQ in celebration of Neighbour Day. Neighbour Day is Australia’s annual celebration of community, encouraging people to connect with those who live in their neighbourhood. The aim of Neighbour Day is to build better relationships with the people who live around us, especially the elderly and vulnerable.
A key part of the HYPA Housing model is encouraging our tenants to engage with the local community. Social connection makes us feel better as it helps prevent loneliness, isolation and depression and connecting with neighbours is an important part of developing that social connection.
Guests for the event included neighbours from over the fence living in Inner City Community Housing, Shadow Minister for Families and Child Protection Rachel Sanderson, HYPA General Manager Janice Hoad, Reclink (HYPA’s new partner for acitivities and programs), Jane Laws from Adelaide City Council, current HYPA Housing tenants, past HYPA Housing tenants, HYPA Housing Community Leaders and our Youth Workers.
The Community Leader Program is designed to provide additional support from within the HYPA Housing tenant communities for the HYPA Housing tenants. The Community Leaders are an established HYPA Housing tenant, with first-hand experiences and knowledge of what HYPA Housing is and the challenges young people face. The role gives the Community Leader the chance to share those experiences and knowledge with other HYPA Housing tenants to help guide and support them through their HYPA Housing experience. HYPA Housing Community Leaders are trained, guided and supported by HYPA staff and will receive Certificates of Completion for the training provided and Certificates of Appreciation and a reference for their resume at the completion of their position.
The event was very successful and our tenants had a great time socialising with guests across age groups and welcomed the past tenants and community leader’s from other sites. Our tenants also cooked a delicious dinner, thanks to a generous donation of sausages from the Gourmet Sausage shop, using a BBQ which was installed for last year’s Neighbour Day event thanks to a grant from the Adelaide City Council. Our newly appointed Adelaide Community Leader Dannie assisted in the set up and pack down of the event, with the assistance of the other tenants. Through the event we even found out that one of our tenants from another site knew a HYPA Housing Adelaide resident, without knowing they both lived in HYPA Housing. We are inspired now to run future Neighbour Day BBQs with our Western and Northern sites.
