Inspiring the next generation of young leaders

  • Aug 22, 2016
At the start of August, Business Development Manager for Job Prospects, Scott Whitmore was invited by the Aboriginal Power Cup to speak on employability skills as part of a two day leadership program targeted at Indigenous students.

The Aboriginal Power Cup is an initiative by the Port Adelaide Football Club and the SA Aboriginal Sports Training Academy, which reaches nearly 500 students from more than 40 schools in metropolitan and regional South Australia. With a competitive football carnival as its centrepiece, it focuses on engaging young people in education, promoting healthy lifestyle choices and developing teamwork, leadership and life skills.

This year’s theme is Powerful Futures – Your Future, Yours for the Taking. The theme encourages students to understand that the world is what you make it and it’s up to you to take your future into your own hands and take the next step from school and straight into employment or further education, something which fits perfectly with what we do here at SYC.

Students in Years 11 and 12 who excelled in the Aboriginal Power Cup were invited to participate in a two day leadership program at Alberton Oval. Participants attended various workshops where they explored both individual and team goals, career pathways and leadership.

Mr Whitmore said his presentation focused on preparing the group for the future covering topics ranging from dress standards to employer expectations.

“It’s crucial that young people not only get guidance on the importance of education and work experience, but also on life skills like creating a good first impression and networking” he said.
